ESFR sprinklers — complete design guide

Early Suppression Fast Response (ESFR) sprinkler selection, K-factor, pressure, clearance and obstruction rules for high-piled storage.

What ESFR is

ESFR (Early Suppression Fast Response) sprinklers are large-orifice, fast-response heads designed to suppress a high-challenge storage fire, not merely control it. NFPA 13 lists them in Chapter 23. Available K-factors include K14.0 (K200), K16.8 (K242), K22.4 (K320) and K25.2 (K360). All are quick-response (RTI ≤ 50).

When to specify ESFR

ESFR is the default modern choice for racked storage of cartoned plastics up to 13.7 m (45 ft), provided the ceiling height stays within the listing. Below ~7.6 m of storage, control-mode density/area sprinklers are usually cheaper. Above 13.7 m, in-rack sprinklers or supplementary protection becomes mandatory.

Pressure & flow

ESFR demand is calculated for the 12 most-remote sprinklers (4 on each of the 3 most remote branches), all flowing at the listed minimum pressure. Tank duration is 60 minutes plus hose stream allowance. Typical pump duty: 6000–11000 L/min at 4–6 bar at the riser.

Clearance & obstruction

Minimum 914 mm (36 in) clearance between top of storage and deflector. Deflector 100–355 mm (4–14 in) below the ceiling, depending on K-factor and listing. Obstruction rules are stricter than spray sprinklers — the 'three times rule' applies to bottom-of-obstruction distance.

Common mistakes

1) Mixing ESFR with standard-response sprinklers on the same branch — prohibited. 2) Insufficient water supply (ESFR demand far exceeds equivalent CMSA). 3) Obstructions like cable trays, ducts or lighting interfering with the spray pattern. 4) Forgetting that FM Global rules (DS 8-9) differ from NFPA 13 and are often stricter.
